After work seminar: Crowdfunding

21 October 16:00 - 21 October 18:00

This session will cover the phenomenon of crowdfunding, what it is and how it is being used in practice. In so doing, it will look at crowdfunding in the context of investment and fundraising more generally, as well as in the context of the broader crowdsourcing movement. Claire Ingram will look at the broader picture, while Dr Magnus Essand and Pernilla Björk from Uppsala University will discuss their successful “iCancer” crowdfunding campaign, which raised over 2 million GBP in 2013.

When? Tuesday, October 21, 2014, 16.00-18.00
Where? Uppsala BIO, Dag Hammarskjölds väg 10B
How? Snack, coffee/tea.

Claire Ingram is a PhD student at the Stockholm School of Economics, and is looking into the role that peer-to-peer technologies, driven by entrepreneurs, have on existing institutions. She studies crowdfunding and cryptocurrencies in a number of contexts. Her background is in Economics, Philosophy and Law, and she holds a B.Soc.Sci and an LL.B from the University of Cape Town in South Africa.

Prof Magnus Essand is a researcher at the Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology, Uppsala University. His main research interest is immunotherapy of cancer. Through a successful crowdfunding campaign, a biological agent (oncolytic virus) developed in Magnus Essand’s laboratory will now be evaluated in a clinical trial. This is mainly thanks to the help of Alexander Masters but also Dominic Nutt and Liz Scarff in London, UK.

Pernilla Björk is Director of Communication at Uppsala University. Since 2009 Pernilla has been leading the Division for Communication and External Relations where the responsibility for Alumni and Fundraising matters lie within its organisational structure. Previously she has been Director of Communication at the Swedish Ministry of Education and Research (Utbildningsdepartementet) and Head of Communication at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU).

The seminar will be held in English.
