Expanding your research with MAX IV and ESS

23 March 07:30 - 23 March 09:30

Sweden hosts two world leading accelerator-based research facilities and now could be the time to put them to work in your research.

During this breakfast seminar, Tomas Lundqvist, Life Science Director of MAX IV will explore the opportunities for academic and industrial use of the brightest X-ray source in the world and what that means for researchers in Stockholm. Esko Oksanen who leads the NMX instrument at ESS will also present an array of different instruments that will be available at ESS, utilising neutrons to probe biological systems and materials alike. After this short introduction, we will hear three case studies from Stockholm based researchers from both academia and industry. They will explain how they use these facilities to help their research stand out.

Mechanisms of small molecule transport David Drew is a Wallenberg Academy Fellow at the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at Stockholm University. David focuses on small molecule transporters that move solutes across the cell membrane. The goal is to understand how they can be better targeted in drug development.

Analyzing fossil plant material for molecular signaturesVivi Vajda is professor and Head of Paleobiology Department at the Swedish Museum of Natural History in Stockholm. She specializes in microscopic fossils, mostly pollen, spores, algae and fungi from Earth’s earlier history with aims to resolve questions concerning extinction and evolution of ecosystems.

Structural Biology at Sprint BioscienceLionel Trésaugues is Principal Scientist at Sprint Bioscience and is responsible for structural biology within the company. The aim of protein crystallography at Sprint Bioscience is to deliver crystal structures of complexes between our protein targets and the inhibitors designed and synthetized in-house in order to help chemists to improve the properties of our inhibitors (potency, selectivity).

When: March 23, 08:00-09:30 (breakfast will be served from 07:30, providing time for networking before, as well as after the seminar where representatives from ESS and MAX IV will be availableWhere: Wenner-Gren Center, Sveavägen 166, 23th floor

Please note that the seminar will be held in English.
