CECILIA EDEBO: It’s been just over a year since I stepped into the role of CEO at Sahlgrenska Science Park – and what an inspiring, eventful year it has been. I’ve had the privilege of working alongside passionate innovators, dedicated researchers, healthcare professionals, forward-thinking entrepreneurs and a thriving life science ecosystem that is committed to addressing global health challenges by unleashing the power of co-action.
At Sahlgrenska Science Park (SSP) our vision is clear: together with partners, create a world class life science region, with sustainable and competitive companies on a global market. Through collaboration across sectors, institutions and borders, we’re proud to be shaping the future of healthcare from West Sweden – for the benefit of patients, healthcare systems and society at large.
A cornerstone of this work is Health Innovation West – the regional life science cluster we proudly facilitate. Home to more than 500 life science companies, the region includes global leaders such as AstraZeneca, Mölnlycke Health Care, Getinge, and Vitrolife, alongside a vibrant and growing start-up community. Our CO-AX Accelerator has played a key role in nurturing this entrepreneurial ecosystem over the years.
This dynamic environment is further strengthened by world-class academic institutions like Chalmers University of Technology and Sahlgrenska Academy, as well as Sahlgrenska University Hospital – one of Europe’s leading university hospitals.
Together, we are driving forward a collective mission: to contribute to Sweden’s national life science strategy and the vision of becoming a world-leading life science nation.
Sahlgrenska Global Health Hackathon – is a bold initiative aiming to showcase our Swedish powerhouse as we as engage the world to come together to address five global health challenges. The Hackathon is inclusive and bringing together partners from different sectors and different countries. It’s a powerful reminder that innovation isn’t just about technology; it’s about people, purpose and collaboration.
We’re also proud to be key contributor in PRECISEU, a European initiative focused on connecting innovation ecosystems across Europe to efficiently advance towards a truly personalised healthcare, transferring practices and solutions from region to region and scaling up deep-tech healthcare innovations and health data across Europe. More effective treatments for patients, and more efficient healthcare systems – that’s the future we’re working toward.
As I reflect on this past year, I’m filled with both gratitude and a renewed sense of purpose. I’m grateful for the vibrant and committed ecosystem we’re part of – and energised by the opportunities ahead. At the same time, I’m mindful of the challenges we face: navigating complex regulatory landscapes, securing sustainable funding, and bridging the gap between innovation and implementation in healthcare.
West Sweden – and Sweden as a whole – has strong foundations: world-class research, advanced infrastructure, and a collaborative spirit. But if we want to lead in life science innovation, we must continue building capacity & capability from bench to bedside, strengthening partnerships and ensuring that health innovations reach the market and patients. At Sahlgrenska Science Park, we’re committed to supporting that journey – with passion, persistence, and a focus on long-term impact.
Thank you to all our partners and collaborators. I look forward to what we will accomplish together in the years to come – for the benefit of patients, healthcare, and society.
