About us

The Stockholm Science City Foundation is a proactive and supportive expert organisation.

Our vision is for Stockholm to be Europe’s most attractive university capital for research, education and entrepreneurship.

Stockholm Science City Foundation was established in 1990 to strengthen collaboration between Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Stockholm University, and to develop the environments around these universities.

Stockholm Science City works to strengthen collaboration between universities, healthcare, the business sector and other stakeholders in the Stockholm area, with a particular focus on Hagastaden. Life science is the Foundation’s core focus. We create meeting places and networks that enable knowledge exchange, collaboration and innovation. Through knowledge and analysis, networks and meeting places, and joint initiatives, we create the conditions for knowledge exchange, innovation and international competitiveness.

Our work spans three main areas:

Knowledge and analysis: We monitor developments in life science and innovation, sharing insights through seminars, reports, statistics and newsletters.

Networks and meeting places: We bring together researchers, businesses, healthcare providers, the public sector and other stakeholders to facilitate knowledge exchange and new collaborations.

Ecosystem development: We initiate joint efforts and bring stakeholders together to address needs and opportunities that no single organisation can tackle alone. One example is the development of Hagastaden as an innovation district and as part of the Stockholm-Uppsala life science cluster.

Our mission is guided by the purpose set out in the Foundation’s statutes. We are an independent, non-profit organisation.

Our activities are funded by Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Stockholm University, together with the City of Stockholm and Region Stockholm.

We strengthen Stockholm’s competitiveness in life science by promoting collaboration between universities, companies, and society. To make Stockholm an internationally attractive hub for research and business, we work in a needs-driven way together with industry, academia, and public stakeholders.

Stockholm Science City is not a membership organisation and does not represent individual companies. Our role is to develop the innovation ecosystem, not individual businesses.

Our remit therefore does not include business development support for individual companies, sales or commercial matchmaking. This includes organising B2B meetings, facilitating introductions to individual companies, or identifying commercial partners and business opportunities for suppliers.

Depending on the nature of the enquiry, we refer people to:

  • Business Sweden for international expansion and establishing operations in new markets.
  • Stockholm Business Region for enquiries about starting, running or establishing a business in Stockholm.
  • KI Science Park for enquiries relating to the science park in Hagastaden.
  • The relevant universities and research institutions for research collaborations.

Hagastaden is a leading life science innovation district and a key focus of our work. Our involvement in Hagastaden dates to the development of Vision 2025, the vision for the area. Link to Vision 2025 >>

Through the Capital of Life strategy, the Foundation takes a regional approach to strengthening the Stockholm–Uppsala region as an internationally competitive life science cluster. This work brings together stakeholders from across the region around a shared direction and strengthens the coordination, visibility and development of the existing ecosystem. Read more here:
