Hagastaden

Hagastaden is one of Europe’s leading innovation districts within life science. This growing urban area is located not far from Stockholm Central Station and connects the cities of Stockholm and Solna.

About the Hagastaden Innovation District

Hagastaden is home to Karolinska University Hospital, Karolinska Institutet (KI), SciLifeLab, St. Erik Eye Hospital, and KI Science Park. It also hosts nearly 200 life science companies – from startups to large global enterprises. In addition, KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Stockholm University (SU) operate in Hagastaden through SciLifeLab and MedTechLab. With the campuses of KTH, Stockholm University, and the Stockholm School of Economics nearby, companies established here benefit from exceptional opportunities.

The Hagastaden innovation district is both a growth engine and a hub for life science in the region. The strong research environments provide an excellent foundation for life science business.

Johan Christenson, Chairman, Stockholm Science City, and Partner HealthCap

Stockholm Science City’s involvement in the Hagastaden innovation district began with the creation of a shared vision for the area, Vision 2025, signed in 2007 by the City of Stockholm, the City of Solna, Region Stockholm, the business sector, and the universities in Stockholm. The goal of the vision was to develop Hagastaden into a world-leading location for life science. Together with property owners, the City of Stockholm, Region Stockholm, KI, KTH, and SU, we work to attract more organisations to the area and support the innovation ecosystem.

Having our office in Forskaren, in the heart of Hagastaden, gives us excellent proximity to partners in healthcare, academia, and industry. It strengthens our collaboration within one of Europe’s most dynamic innovation clusters and makes us even more attractive to top talent.

Emelie Antoni, Country President Nordic & Sweden, AstraZeneca

Hagastaden is expected to be largely completed by 2030. By then, it will be home to 13,000 residents and 50,000 workplaces. In addition to companies, universities, hospitals, and public services, the district will feature restaurants, hotels, conference facilities, gyms, and The Cell – an exhibition venue run by the National Museum of Science and Technology, with Karolinska Institutet as a knowledge partner.

Hagastaden is full of events, meetings, and spontaneous connections. It’s a place where collaboration grows naturally – over coffee, at events, or in everyday encounters.
