New treatments often improve patients’ quality of life, but their benefits may extend far beyond the individual patient. Effective treatments can reduce sick leave, improve productivity, and make healthcare delivery more efficient. In some cases, innovation can also generate wider societal value through the growth of companies, new investments and jobs. With advances in methodologies and access to more data, the societal values could be better assessed.

Welcome to a seminar exploring whether – and how – we can broaden the way we assess the costs and benefits of novel treatments.

We have invited speakers and panellists with different perspectives to explore new ideas and discuss the opportunities and challenges of developing approaches that better capture the full value created by innovation, as well as the costs associated with it.

Among the questions we will explore:

  • Which societal benefits could be included when assessing the value of new treatments?
  • How can narrow definitions of value lead to suboptimal decisions and inefficient allocation of resources?
  • What are the practical and methodological challenges of incorporating a broader range of benefits and costs into assessments?
  • How can we promote innovation in the life sciences while ensuring that the costs of new treatments remain sustainable?
  • How can better access to and use of healthcare data help us understand and capture the real-world value of novel treatments?
