How CRKI contributes to cancer research

CRKI (Cancer Research Karolinska Institutet) is Karolinska Institutet’s strategic initiative for advancing cancer research. Liselotte Bäckdahl, Research Coordinator at CRKI, explains how the organisation supports researchers, highlights its key focus areas, and reflects on the impact of its initiatives.

– Our mission is to strengthen and coordinate cancer research at KI. We AIM to create the best possible conditions for research that can lead to improved cancer diagnostics, treatment, and prevention, says Liselotte Bäckdahl.

The overarching goal is to strengthen Karolinska Institutet’s position as a leading international centre for cancer research. Another key OBJECTIVE is to contribute to better, more precise, and more personalised cancer care – always with the patient at the centre.

How does CRKI support cancer research in practice?

– CRKI serves as a collaborative platform for researchers, clinicians, and partners. We work to CONNECT basic, translational, and clinical research, promote international collaborations, and support researchers through infrastructure, education, networking opportunities, and strategic initiatives, she explains.

CRKI organises scientific meetings, seminars, and online workshops covering a wide range of topics relevant to cancer researchers. The organisation also maintains an extensive network of more than 400 cancer Principal Investigators (PIs), connected through its PI database.

What are CRKI’s main focus areas?

– Our focus groups span the entire pathway from research to societal BENEFIT:

  • Research strengthens excellence and interdisciplinary collaboration in cancer research.
  • Education focuses on training and professional development for the next generation of cancer researchers.
  • Outreach promotes communication and dialogue with patients, the public, and wider society.
  • Precision Medicine advances the development of more personalised cancer care.
  • Industry Collaborations fosters partnerships with industry to accelerate innovation and clinical implementation.

What impact have your initiatives had?

– We are proud of all our events, and participation has grown steadily over time. Our Cancer Retreat — two full days dedicated to the latest advances in research — demonstrates year after year how extensive and successful cancer research at KI truly is. With around 290 places available, the event is fully booked within a week. Over the past three years, we have also organised a retreat exclusively for PIs, creating additional opportunities for networking and new collaborations.

– We are also delighted to offer several research grants to cancer researchers, and we are incredibly grateful for the strong interest they attract. AS one example, our Translational Seed Grant has helped strengthen the link between basic research and clinical application at Karolinska University Hospital by supporting joint projects between researchers and clinicians.

– Last but not least, I would like to highlight our close and strategically important collaboration with Karolinska Comprehensive Cancer Center (KCCC). Together, we have worked purposefully to strengthen the connection between cancer research and cancer care at the hospital. We have recently undergone reaccreditation to remain a certified Comprehensive Cancer Center, where this integration was recognised as a key strength. This collaboration will also be crucial moving forward — not least in ensuring that precision medicine continues to advance and becomes accessible to all cancer patients, concludes Liselotte Bäckdahl.
