Sustainability

For more than 20 years, Stockholm Science City has worked alongside other stakeholders to develop Hagastaden into a world-leading life science innovation district – and a sustainable, vibrant neighbourhood where people can live and work.

Hagastaden’s development is built on the long-term commitment of universities, hospitals, companies, property owners, the City of Stockholm and Region Stockholm. As a small organisation in a large innovation district, we make the greatest impact through collaboration. We bring stakeholders together, share knowledge and create opportunities for new partnerships that contribute to a more sustainable Hagastaden and a strong innovation ecosystem.

How we contribute

A sustainable innovation district

Since 2007, we have contributed to the development of Hagastaden as an attractive, vibrant and sustainable innovation district where research, business, healthcare and society come together. We collaborate with property owners in the area, among others, providing insights into the needs of the life science ecosystem while helping to share knowledge about sustainable initiatives and solutions with local companies.

Knowledge & collaboration

We create meeting places and share knowledge to help organisations advance their sustainability efforts. As many larger organisations already have well-established sustainability programmes, we place particular emphasis on small and medium-sized life science companies, which often have fewer resources to dedicate to this work. Through our Monthly Sustainability Initiative, we also highlight good practices that can inspire others, encourage knowledge exchange and create opportunities for new collaborations.

Starting with ourselves

We strive to be a sustainable and attractive workplace, with a focus on health, gender equality, the work environment and responsible use of resources. We also work continuously to reduce our own environmental impact through sustainable procurement and food choices, reducing food waste and using resources responsibly. Since 2026, we have also been monitoring the climate impact of our business travel and overnight stays, choosing rail over air travel whenever possible.

Our activities are particularly closely linked to four of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
We strengthen the conditions for research and innovation by sharing knowledge, building networks and fostering collaboration between academia, industry, healthcare and the public sector.

Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
We contribute to the development of Hagastaden as an attractive and sustainable environment for research, innovation, business and people.

Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
We make research, facts and scientific perspectives more accessible and create meeting places where knowledge can reach decision-makers and other stakeholders in society.

Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals
Collaboration is at the heart of our mission. We build relationships and create opportunities for partnerships between universities, companies, healthcare, the public sector and international innovation environments.
