We live in a time marked by rapid technological development, growing security threats, climate challenges, and changing skills requirements, all of which place increasing demands on society. At the same time, many researchers at our universities describe how their knowledge is used too late, too little, or not at all. The willingness to collaborate exists, but they argue that current structures are not sufficient.

Researchers from Stockholm University and KTH argue that universities possess expertise that could play a much greater role in addressing societal challenges and strengthening Sweden’s preparedness. However, they describe how researchers are often involved too late in policymaking and public-sector development processes, limiting the impact of research. The interviews highlight the need for earlier involvement of researchers, more structured collaboration between academia and public authorities, and funding mechanisms that support long-term partnerships. Together, they point to a clear conclusion: the knowledge exists, but stronger structures are needed to ensure it is used when it matters most.
